Douarnenez is home to a strange competition featuring cardboard boats that must be able to float and hold several people. It’s a great success – well, not for everybody – but half the fun is watching some of the teams sink while others try to complete the race, while all concerned are in fancy dress and having a whale of a time. This great sporting highlight takes place every other year, between May and June on the Port Rhu.
